Strange Week in Sports

The last week has been quit strange for sports fans. Big Ben Roethlisberger has his problems with a woman accusing him of rape in Lake Tahoe last year. Roethlisberger denies the allegations for at least now and we will see were this case goes.

The saga continues with Brett Favre as it looked like he was not going to come out of retirement but this week Viking’s players such as Adrian Peterson have come out and said they would like Favre to join the team. Time will tell if this changes Brett’s mind.

Michael Vick is set to meet with Roger Goodell in hopes of being reinstated into the NFL. Vick has spent two years away from football but is eager to return to the sport. Goodell holds the key for that to happen.

I recently heard that TJ Houshmandzadeh will forget about playing the new madden because he feels as though his receivers rating is too low for him. EA Sports and Madden gave TJ a rating of 91 which I think is relatively high for him. The man at draft day that you yell out TJ Housmanzilla put him on the board is acting a little bit like a baby. If he is unhappy with his rating then he needs to just prove it on the field and not rant on about how he is no longer playing the game because of it. Seriously TJ.

Phil Mickelson, who skipped the British Open to take time off to be with his wife and mother who are both battling cancer, is investing in buying part ownership of Waffle House. That’s right, the lefty is looking into buying 105 Waffle House locations at a price around 20 million. The Pro Golfer is looking to make some more money than just on the golf course. Huh, next time that I eat at Waffle House I might just have to ask if it is one of Phil Mickelson’s.

British Open: Day Two Recap

Tom Watson and Steve Marino will enter the third day of the British Open with a share of the lead. Watson started the day off with a birdie but then bogeyed the second. He went on to bogey holes 4 through 7 and it was looking like he was going to have a rough day. The 59 year old pro began to change his play and made some of the most remarkable puts of the day. On holes 9 and 11 he hit superb birdie putts. On the 16th and 18th is where he really shined and made putts, on each of those holes, that where around 40 feet. Marino played up and down golf during the first two hours. On the 17th he hit an eagle put that sent the crowd roaring and put him in the lead for the time being. He finished the day 2 under par. Marino and Watson will be the final pairing going into tomorrow. My sleeper Vijay Singh is still lurking around with and even par day. Singh is tied for fourth and is only two strokes back going into the weekend.

Biggest let down day two: Tiger Woods missed the cut and this is only the fifth tournament that he has missed the cut in his thirteen year old career. The number one player in the world played some of the worst golf in his career. Rarely do you see Woods double bogey but he did it today and not only once. He doubled holes 10 and 13 which proved to be too much to come back from.

Biggest surprise day two: Matteo Manassero who is just an amateur who is sixteen years old. Manassero played beside Tom Watson and managed to keep composed and finished the day even par. For the tournament he is one over par and looking to keep up his play.

British Open: Day 1 Recap

The British Open began today and the players could not have asked for better conditions at Turnberry. There was slight to no wind and warm enough weather that the players could sport short sleeves. Tiger Woods was all over the course today and could not seem to get in a rhythm. He birdied the second but then came back the next hole and bogeyed it. He was doing this all day long and finished with a 71 and is 7 strokes back from the leader Miguel Angel Jimenez. Padraig Harrington set out to defend his British Open title for the past two years and played fairly good golf even though he missed an opportunity on 17th for an eagle but he finished one under par. My sleeper in Vijay Singh, who I briefed on yesterday, played some real good golf and shot a round of 67. Singh is only three strokes back of Jimenez and looking strong.

Biggest let down day one: Anthony Kim who is 27th on the money list and played some good golf in his last tournament, the Tiger Woods AT&T National in Maryland, finishing third. At Turnberry he struggled with some neck pain and shot a quadruple bogey on the second. It was hard for him to come back from that and finished with a round of 73.

Biggest surprise day one: I have two. One is the remarkable play of fifty-nine year old Tom Watson who posted a first round of 65. At 5 under par he played great golf for a guy who might not have many more chances like this at his age. Watson finished with five birdies and the rest were par. He outshined the young guys that are up an coming on the PGA Tour. My second big surprise of the day is John Daly who started and finished the day off with a bogey but still managed to shoot two under par and play fairly well for a guy who has been through as much as he has been. This is only Daly's second tournament this year and he would like to make it memerable one.

British Open

Tiger Woods takes aim at winning yet another major but Ailsa golf course in Scotland might not be so giving. Padraig Harrington returns again to the British Open having won it each of the last two years and looks to make for a three peat. Can Tiger win his fourth British Open or will Harrington and the rest of the field be too much. One bit of good news for Tiger is that “the lefty” Mickelson will not be in the tournament. Not that Tiger even thinks about that kind of stuff. He is focused and ready to keep making strides at Jack’s record. V.J. Singh I feel was played some good golf and will be lurking come the final round. So the question is do you take Tiger or do you take the field?
